Robert B. Rockwell papers 1895-1940.

This large collection, the field notes, photographs and other materials of ornithologist Robert B. Rockwell, is contained in two boxes, four three-ring binders, two bound volumes, one scrapbook and numerous files of images. The two boxes, one 12.5 x 15.5 x 10 inches, the other 2.5 x 15.5 x 10 inches, hold loose field notes, bird lists, permits and other documents related to the Colorado Biological Society, of which Rockwell was a charter member. The three-ring binders hold field notes dating from 1898 to 1937, while the bound volumes, whose content dates from 1898 to 1909, hold specimen data as well as field notes. The scrapbook, which holds specimen data, dates from 1899 to 1907. The images are nitrate and glass negatives, lantern slides, prints and copy slides. Most were taken by Rockwell, who was known for his photographs of birds. Species shown in the images include screech owls, great-horned owls, Williamsonâ‚‚s sapsucker, broad-tailed hummingbirds and others, as well as images of eggs, scenery, and animals.

Robert Blanchard Rockwell was an investment banker, ornithologist and Colorado Museum of Natural History (CMNH) trustee who served the museum from its first decade. Rockwell was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1883, the son of Fred Rockwell, one of Colorado's pioneering cattle ranchers.
